Baptisms
What is baptism?
Baptism is a “sacrament”, a visible sign of God’s love for us.
The Christian good news declares that because of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the way is open for all people to become members of God’s family. We do that by putting our trust in Jesus Christ, and choosing to live God’s way.
Baptism is a sign and seal of this new life in Christ. What happens spiritually when we come to God is illustrated physically by the water.
Baptism also marks a new start: a decision to follow Jesus Christ within the family of the Church.
Whether you are thinking about being baptised yourself, or bringing your child to be baptised, we’d love to talk with you more about this celebration of new life.
Why baptism?
For infants, baptism (commonly known as ‘Christening’) is the start of your child’s exciting journey into the Christian faith and we are here to help you as you prepare for this important step and for the commitments you will be asked to make on behalf of your child. As such, we run 3 mandatory preparation sessions, twice a year.
If you’d like to find out more please contact the church office.
For some parents, a thanksgiving service is often more suitable when they feel that they do not want to make the baptism promises, but still want to thank God for the gift of their precious child. We will be pleased to talk further about which service may be right for you.
For adults, baptism is a means of declaring your commitment to God and your decision to live His way, and a means of receiving His grace for the journey ahead. It also marks your full acceptance into membership of the worldwide Church.
When do baptisms take place?
Baptisms normally happen at one of our morning services so that the whole church can join in the celebration and share in your joy. St John’s is also equipped with a purpose build Baptism Pool so we can offer full immersion baptism where this is preferred.
