Music at the Traditional Service
At the Traditional Sunday Service (9:00am Service), worship includes hymns, songs and anthems supported by organ or piano music and our keen amateur choir. The hymns and songs are selected by a dedicated team from the congregation who try to match the music to the theme of each service. The music as a whole is much appreciated by the congregation, helping us worship and contemplate God’s word.
Choir
St John’s vibrant choir supports the congregational singing of hymns and songs, and most Sundays sings a 3- or 4-part anthem. As well as singing on Sundays, we also lead the Good Friday Tenebrae service and Carols by Candlelight at Christmas, when our ranks are augmented by members of the other congregations.
We are ably supported by up to four Malcolm Bateman choral scholars each year, who are funded by a generous bequest.
Membership is open to all without audition and we offer a friendly and supportive environment in which to sing. We are always keen to recruit new members. Organist and Choirmaster – Terry Hogan
Terry has lived in Egham since 2001 and has been the main organist at St John’s since 2020. Following an organ scholarship at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he moved to London and for a while held the post of organist and choirmaster at St Mary’s, Battersea, as well as conducting the St Martin Singers. Terry also plays keyboards with the Ember Big Band and for various local drama societies.
Choral and Organ Scholars – 2025/26
Assistant Organist and Bass Choral Scholar- Logan Williamson
Logan grew up in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk where he sang at the cathedral as a chorister and where he discovered the organ. He later became Organ Scholar at Chelmsford Cathedral, Essex. He is currently a music student at Royal Holloway. Looking forward, Logan hopes to direct choirs and continue to play the organ professionally. Logan is excited to work with Terry Hogan at St John’s and has already been made to feel very welcome by the choir and congregation alike.
Alto Choral Scholar – Abigail Jones
Abigail is a second-year music student from Royal Holloway. She is originally from Maidstone, Kent and has been singing in church choirs since the age of 7. Music consumes most of her time, but on the rare occasion she gets some time off, she enjoy figure skating at local ice rinks and walking around Englefield Green.
Soprano Choral Scholar- Jasmine Stoutt
Jasmine is a second-year music student from Royal Holloway. She was born in the Isle of Man but grew up in Hyderabad, India, and has been singing in church choirs since she was seven. Alongside her studies, she enjoys running and playing piano, and is excited to be part of the community at St John’s Egham this year.
