Kitchen Processes
Many volunteers help prepare and cook meals at St John’s. This includes using:
- The church servery / washup area
- The Caddey
- The servery in the Easter Centre atrium
- The main kitchen on the first floor of the Easter Centre

Log Forms for the facilities
The log forms are to help us keep a log of the fridge and freezer temperatures, food that has been served, & cleanliness of the facilities.
Logging the opening and closing of the kitchen can be found here: https://forms.office.com/e/sXy959MJDb The closing log form will indicate the cleaning that needs to be completed at the end of your session. Please select the check boxes that you have covered in your cleaning of the kitchen at the end of your session.

Resetting the Main Kitchen
As there are no full time staff members to clean up after users, it is expected that each team that uses any of these facilities reset the areas to its original way. Below are photos of how the main kitchen is expected to be reset back to after use:
Sharps
There are: Knives, scissors, potato peelers, can openers, pizza slicer
Cutlery Draws
These are currently the 2 under the microwave and the one close to the stove
Pots
Aprons, Tea Towels, Oven Gloves
Currently this is stacked on one shelf. In the future a second shelf might be instated
Metal Shelves
Please can everyone make a conscious effort to stack items with small items on top of large items like a pyramid. That means place large trays under small trays, or place small baskets inside large baskets.
Above the sink shelves
This might change from time to time, but to keep the general area above the shelves tidy. The toaster tray needs to be cleaned out after every use before placing back on the shelf. When items are moved off a shelf, please take this as an opportunity to wipe the shelf down before replacing the item.
Managing Waste
Organise a waste champion who will be able to direct and separate:
- Food waste
- To go into the compost bins: Coffee grounds, paper, small brown cardboard boxes (remove sellotape, labels and any staples and place into general waste), paper tissues, egg shells, flowers, vegetable and fruit peelings
- To go to chickens: Check in with the CF team for a lady who has over 100 pet chickens. They give their chickens vegetable, fruit, bread and cooked food waste.
- To go into the council food waste bin: Cheese, meat, fish, bones, cooked food. If you have been using the ovens, consider dehydrating all the items if you can by placing a pan of the food items into an oven that has just been turned off. The height will reduce the water content of the food which means less mass and less energy transporting the items.
General Waste vs Recycled Waste
Ensure you know and understand what can be recycled on Runnymede Borough Council’s website: https://www.runnymede.gov.uk/recycling-waste/household-collections-2/3
- Recycling: Clean, dry paper, cardboard, cans, glass and approved plastics are collected every two weeks. Pizza boxes with grease will need the grease part torn out from the box and the greasy part can be put in the general waste. Tin foil needs to be clean and be a fist size. If you can, please take any of the recycling back home with you, to help us manage the bin
- General: Contaminated greasy packaging, broken glass, corks are collected every two weeks.
- To Tesco Soft Plastic Bins: There is a silver bin specifically for soft plastic packaging that can be recycled. Check the packaging. It will often indicate if Tesco’s (and other stores) will recycle the packaging in store.
